Important progress in the fight against the Camposol biogas plant
Indications that the biogas plant company may be seeking an alternative location
At a public meeting held on 1st May in the local golf club the Camposol Legal Platform against Biogas has been able to give good news to the local residents who are opposing the construction of a potentially damaging biogas plant only one kilometre from housing in the urbanization.
The meeting was organized to explain to residents the content of a technical report commissioned by the Platform, analysing the documentation available. This report constitutes one of the technical bases on which the Platform would base possible administrative and legal actions against the location initially proposed.
But during the meeting representatives of the Platform committee held a conversation with Jesús García, deputy mayor of Mazarrón and Councillor for Town Planning, who has been in regular contact with the Platform and was supplied with a copy of the technical report, and Sr Garcia confirmed that progress has been made in establishing a specific distance criterion for the implementation of this type of facility.
According to the information given by the Sr García, Mazarrón council will be working on a proposal for biogas plants to be considered facilities linked to energy production, with specific urban planning requirements and greater distances from population centres. This proposal would be pending completion of its corresponding administrative processing and, where appropriate, approval in a council plenary meeting.
The councillor also reported that in talks held with representatives of the company proposing to build the plant, it emerged that the planned location is being reconsidered and more suitable alternative locations are being scouted out elsewhere.
The Platform considers this a very positive development for Camposol and the surrounding towns, acknowledging that it seems to have come about as a consequence of the published report and the Town Hall’s proposed planning criteria. However, caution is being maintained since the administrative procedures must continue until their final approval.
In the meantime, according to a spokesperson for Camposol's Legal Platform, “the Platform will continue to monitor the case and act accordingly."
The Platform wants to make it clear that the opposition is not directed against biogas plants in general, which can be part of the circular economy and a sustainable energy model, but against those locations that may negatively affect the quality of life, safety, the residential environment and the well-being of residents.
This progress is in addition to other citizen and institutional actions that are taking place in different municipalities of the Region of Murcia, where similar projects have been the subject of review, public debate or rethinking by administrations and neighbourhood groups.
Camposol's Legal Platform against Biogas will continue to inform residents of any relevant developments and will maintain its firm commitment to the defence of the interests of Camposol and the surrounding communities.
The information published is based on what was received during the public meeting and on the documentation currently available, without prejudice to the administrative actions that may occur in the future.
