Bullas is a municipality which falls within the North-western area of the region of Mucia, known as the Comarca del Noroeste. The municipality occupies an area of 82.2 square kilometres, and has 11,500 inhabitants.
Its principal activity is agriculture, specifically viniculture, the D.O. Bullas wines produced across an area of 5,500 hectares integrating 8 municipalities into the production of wine ( Bullas, Cehegín, Mula, Pliego, Ricote, Calasparra, Caravaca, Moratalla and Lorca. The town achieved the D.O status (Denominación de Origen "Bullas",) in 1994.
The predominant grape variety is Monastrell, accounting for 80% of the total production of around 10 million litres per year, other varieties including Tempranillo, Macabeo, Airén, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sirah, Merlot and Garnacha.
The town has a Museum of wine, (El Museo del Vino) dedicated to the production of D.O. Bullas wine, and wine forms the basis for much of the tourism activity in the area. Bodegas can be visited and the wine sampled and purchased directly from the growers themselves.
Rural tourism is also an important economic activity, with the area boasting several attractive natural features cut out by the river Mula, including the Salto del Usero and the Pasico de Ucenda. Bullas is part of the Via Verde del Noroeste, a former railway line which has now been converted into a walking/cycling route, bringing in important rural tourism revenue.
The urban nucleus of the town is 653 metres above sea level, one of the highest in the Region of Murcia, and has several impressive buildings dating from the 20th century when the town underwent significant economic expansion, namely the Casa Melgares, now the Casa de la Cultura, the Casa-Museo Don pepe Marsilla, and the Casa de la Fuente de la Higuera, as well as the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora del Rosario and the Torre del Reloj.
Each month Bullas hosts the artesan market of El Zacatín, one of the most popular and atmospheric in the North-west, selling a wide range of traditional, hand-made items, as well as local wines.
