The Town Hall of Alhama de Murcia is one of many making a concerted attempt to reduce the amount of single-use plastic consumption in an effort to combat pollution, and has announced that on Monday 7th October, a local holiday to celebrate the feast day of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the hot chocolate drinks served to members of the public will be in bio-degradable cardboard cups rather than plastic containers.
At the same time the spoons in the cups will be made of vegetable fibre, and at the migas competition on Friday 11th October the plates served to the judges deciding the winner will also be made of bio-degradable cardboard.
The Town Hall recognizes that these are small gestures but affirms that they represent a commitment to preserving the environment and combating the climate crisis in ways recommended by the UN. The latest steps follow the decision last month to eliminate plastic bottles and cups from the tables in sessions of council, and more such gestures are anticipated in future as the local government continues to try to set a good example for the whole of the m municipality.
