The Labour Inspectorate of the Generalitat of Barcelona is considering slapping the owners of Spanish airline Vueling with a 30,000 euro fine over its discriminatory dress code.

According to the complaint, the carrier asked its female cabin crew to wear high-heels between 5 and 8 centimetres, wear foundation that complimented their natural skin tone and to don black eyeliner and mascara when in the air.

Since the original complaint was made by the Stavla union in April last year, Vueling has assured that it has eliminated the gender distinction from its dress code, has made the use of makeup "totally optional" and has offered various shoe styles for cabin crew, with options starting at 3-centimeter heels.

"We have been working on our style guide and on a more inclusive image," added the airline, which plans to appeal the sanction if it is imposed.

It hasn’t been a great few months for Vueling, which was plagued by staff strikes before Christmas that resulted in plenty of flight disruption. And earlier this month the airline axed 6 routes from its Seville airport roster ahead of the busy Easter period, stirring speculation that the company may be in trouble.
