Torre Pacheco company fined millions for illegal dumping in the Mar Menor
The business pumped enough contaminated water to fill 767 Olympic swimming pools into the Murcia lagoon
The multinational corporation G's España and its business holding company, located in Torre Pacheco, are facing a hefty fine of 1,105 million euros for their involvement in environmental pollution after being found guilty of discharging brine with high levels of agricultural nitrates into the Mar Menor between 2012 and 2016.
The discharge into the protected lagoon was carried out through two illegal desalinating plants that were later dismantled in a joint operation between the Segura Hydrographic Confederation and the Guardia Civil.
The Ministry of the Environment has been cracking down on companies that violate environmental regulations and in this particular case, the authorities have proposed the highest fine of all time, as part of a series of sanctioning proceedings against seven companies or businessmen in Campo de Cartagena.
Through the course of the investigation it was discovered that the two illegal desalination plants were capable of handling 1,900 and 1,000 cubic metres of water per day. However, instead of properly treating the water, the plants released 1.91 cubic hectometres of brine with high concentrations of salt and nitrates into the Albujón Rambla, which flows into the Mar Menor.
Given the current precarious state of the Mar Menor, it’s frightening to think that this volume of water is equivalent to 767 Olympic swimming pools. The contaminated water was then used to irrigate 75 crop plots covering an area of 435 hectares.
G's España and its business holding company are accused of committing a crime against the environment. The Prosecutor's Office of the Region of Murcia is seeking up to three and a half years in prison for the company's administrator, David Abram.
Additionally, the Ministry of the Environment has proposed a fine of 1,105 million euros, which corresponds to 35% of the total amount of more than three million euros that all those accused must pay. Other companies and individuals involved in the case are also facing fines, ranging from 18,846.20 euros to 798,852.49 euros.
