The small summer spending habits that quietly drain your wallet without you noticing
From ice creams on the terrace to last-minute taxi rides, the little daily extras of summer add up faster than most people realise
Summer in Spain is wonderful. The long evenings, the warm nights, the terraces, the spontaneous plans. But it is also the time of year when our finances take a quiet battering, not from one big expense, but from dozens of small ones that barely register in the moment. These are what financial experts call "micro-expenses" or "small expenses," and the Bank of Spain defines them simply as "small payments that we don't think about, which, although they may seem insignificant individually, quickly add up." A coffee here, a bottle of water there, an ice cream on the way back from the beach. None of it feels like much at the time. But over a summer, it absolutely is.
Banco Sabadell has put together a list of the most common culprits. Top of the pile are the daily cold drinks, ice creams and beers on terraces that become almost automatic in the heat. Add to that casual snacks at beach bars, impulse food deliveries when you cannot face cooking, and frequent taxi or ride-hailing trips taken simply to avoid walking in the sun. Then there are the spur-of-the-moment tickets to pools, outdoor cinemas or festivals, the "bargain" fashion items or beach accessories bought in the sales without much thought, and the classic summer staple of buying towels or sunscreen again because you cannot find the ones you already have at home.
None of these things are bad in themselves. The problem is the accumulation.
The good news is that cutting back does not mean cutting out the fun. As Banco Sabadell puts it, "reducing these types of expenses doesn't mean giving up enjoyment, but rather learning to do so more responsibly." Swapping a daily ice cream for one every couple of days, or planning a bus route instead of grabbing a taxi, makes a real difference over a few months without meaningfully changing how much you enjoy the summer.
A few practical habits help too. Keeping a rough note of what you spend for a month is eye-opening. "After a month, add them up to see exactly where your money is going. This helps you become more aware of your spending," advises financial writer Gracia Anso. Setting a weekly budget for these extras, planning shopping trips with a list, and giving yourself at least 24 hours before any impulse purchase are all simple steps that financial experts consistently recommend.
On that last point, the author of Super Savers puts it well: "Often in the heat of the moment you think something is essential, but after a few days you realise you don't really need it."
The summer will still be just as good. Your bank account will thank you for it.
