Murcia celebrates history with 67 new building protections
The Ayuntamiento plans to safeguard iconic city landmarks from demolition and insensitive development
Murcia city has taken a major step to protect its unique architectural heritage, as the Ayuntamiento unveiled plans to give nearly 70 city buildings historic status, shielding them from future bulldozers and unsympathetic renovations. These new protections span celebrated civic buildings in the Region’s capital, like the Government Delegation, the Superior Court of Justice, the Ministries of Health and Economy and beloved local landmarks such as the La Unión y el Fénix building, crowned with its striking phoenix sculpture on Plaza Santa Catalina.
The updated municipal catalog is now the largest expansion in years, with 67 properties, ranging from historicist, rationalist and modern styles, joining the list.
“The restoration of heritage is one of the fundamental pillars of our city project,” stressed Mayor José Ballesta.
The move also builds on recent efforts, including the revival of the Artillery Barracks, restoration of medieval wall sections, and ongoing conservation at the Palace of Ibn Mardanís.
Many of the protected buildings sit on streets like Jabonerías, San Bartolomé, Simón García, and Trapería, with others spread across key city squares including Santo Domingo and Julián Romea. The plan also safeguards institutional facades along the Segura River; vivid proof of Murcia’s layered history.
Protections will vary: four buildings such as Casa Pedreño and Radio Murcia gain full Grade 2 status, preserving their structure; another 60 enjoy Grade 3 designation, securing key architectural features like façades, hallways, finials and ornate roofs.
Among the Grade 3 additions are the Telefónica Building, Hotel Hispano, and Café de Alba, all cherished parts of Murcia’s urban fabric.
“What’s important is that this catalogue remains open,” said Urban Planning Councilor Antonio Navarro, explaining that additions aren’t limited to council initiatives, but can also come from local associations and citizen requests. Licences for work on protected buildings will be suspended for one year, with changes subject to review by the Municipal Heritage Council.
The full list of protected buildings reflects Murcia’s commitment to valuing and respecting its history, covering a wide range of locations that together make up the heart of the city. From grand palaces to corner cafes, each site is now part of a broader effort to keep Murcia’s past alive for future generations.
