Inconclusive municipal election in Alhama could give minority local party a decisive vote

Alhama Aúna may hold the key to deciding the next local government in Alhama de Murcia

The results of the municipal elections which were held throughout Spain on Sunday May 28 have shown a pronounced general swing in favour of the PP and Vox parties, and in Alhama de Murcia this has led to a fascinating period of inter-party negotiations before Councillors are sworn in and the new Mayor or Mayoress is elected on June 17.

Of the 21 seats available in the council 8 were claimed by the PP (three more than in 2019), another 8 by the PSOE (three fewer than in 2019) and 2 each by IU-Verdes and Vox. If “natural” alliances were formed this would leave both left- and right-wing groups with 10 seats each, and the deciding vote would be the one claimed by the local Alhama Aúna party.

This last group stated in the run-up to the election that it would be ready to talk to all other groups in order to ensure the best outcome for the municipality.

The two previous legislatures have seen the council of Alhama dominated by the PSOE party.

Speculation will be rife over the coming days in Alhama, but in the world of local politics it has been seen time and time again that it is unwise to count chickens before they are hatched, and there could yet be many changes over the course of the next three weeks!
