ARCHIVED - Covid vaccine campaign accelerates: 11 regions of Spain will start to vaccinate 40-49 age bracket in June
Spain is speeding ahead with its Covid vaccination campaign with 11 regions announcing they plan to start vaccinating those aged 40 to 49 next month.
By Friday afternoon (May 14) the Spanish health authorities had administered 21,683,707 doses of coronavirus vaccines, with 14,911,306 people having been given one dose, accounting for 31.4 per cent of the population, and 6,976,683 people fully vaccinated (14.7 per cent) of the population.
With more than two million doses of vaccines due to arrive next week, the regions are pushing ahead into the lower age groups and many are now working through those in their 60s and in some cases, their 50s.
According to the latest forecasts published, the vaccination of the 40 to 49 age bracket will begin in June in at least 11 autonomous communities: Andalucia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, Navarra, La Rioja, Valencia, Madrid and Catalonia.
Stepping up its own regional roll-out of jabs, Madrid said today, Friday, May 14, that it will start vaccinating people between 50 and 55 years of age next week.
Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha will administer the first doses of vaccine to the 40 to 49 age bracket in the first week of June, with the health department eager to start vaccinating those under 40 towards the back end of the month.
And if all goes to plan, Extremadura could begin vaccinating the 30 to 39 year-old age group in June.
