British tourist, 75, drowns on Lanzarote beach

The man’s wife raised the alarm after losing sight of him in the water at Los Pocillos Beach in Puerto del Carmen

A 75-year-old British holidaymaker has died following a suspected drowning while swimming off a beach in Lanzarote.

The man was on holiday in the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen when he went into the sea at Los Pocillos Beach on Wednesday afternoon. His wife became concerned after losing sight of him and alerted lifeguards, who raised the alarm.

An emergency search operation was launched at around 2.15pm, involving a helicopter along with coastguards, local police and firefighters. The man’s body was eventually located and recovered from the water by firefighters.

Los Pocillos is a large sandy beach alongside the busy Avenida de Las Playas. The beach is known for its calm, shallow waters and is popular with families and holidaymakers.

A Guardia Civil investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is continuing, although there is currently no suggestion that foul play was involved.

As is usual in Spain, the findings of the post-mortem examination are expected to be passed directly to the investigating judge handling the case rather than being made public.

The incident comes just days after another British holidaymaker, a five-year-old boy, was left in a critical condition following a near-drowning at a holiday pool in the Lanzarote resort of Playa Blanca.

Puerto del Carmen is located on the south-east coast of Lanzarote, while Playa Blanca is further south on the island.
