ARCHIVED - 52 African migrants enter Ceuta in kamikaze van assault
4 sub-Saharans were taken to hospital after careering into Spanish territory on Monday morning
52 sub-Saharan African migrants forced their way into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the southern side of the Strait of Gibraltar on Monday morning when a kamikaze driver succeeded in forcing a van through the frontier post of Tarajal.
The incident took place at around 4.00 in the morning, when the van careered through the barriers between Spain and Morocco while carrying 34 men, 16 women and two children, one aged 5 months and the other 6 years old. Four of the occupants had to be taken to hospital for the treatment of injuries sustained as the strong wind and rain initially added to the confusion among border guards.
However, once the vehicle had made it past the metal gates many of their companions fled on foot to the residential area of La Almadraba, although they were later accompanied by the Guardia Civil to the Temporary Immigrant Detention Centre.
The driver of the van, a Moroccan man resident in France, will face charges related to crimes against the rights of foreign citizens.
