ARCHIVED - 25th January to 23rd February Cehegín tapas and cocktail route
22 establishments offer either tapas and a drink or a cocktail for 2.50€
One of the most popular tapas routes in the Murcia Region begins on Saturday 25th January and runs for four weeks, with the twelfth edition of the annual tapas and cocktails route in Cehegín in the north-west of the Region.
This year 22 establishments are offering tapas and cocktails, with the route taking place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
A tapa and a drink or a cocktail costs just 2.50 euros and those on offer include a wide range of mouth-watering offerings, with each establishment preparing a creative and flavoursome tapa offering for the duration of the route.
This has become a major event over the last few years, with thousands of people driving into the old hilltop town to sample the tapas in different bars as they make their way through the winding streets. Many of the little bars are among the imposing stone coats of arms and wrought iron balconies of the noble houses which dominate the old quarter of Cehegín.
There’s something indefinable about this route which makes it so popular; the air is a little colder as the town is set high above the surrounding plains, making the warm tapas and the smoke from the log burners of the houses more attractive, with the local cuisine characterized by the rich flavours of earthy mushrooms and spicy piquant winter sausages. They are often accompanied by the gutsy red wines from the bodegas of D.O. Bullas, some of which are located in the municipality.
Some of the best D.O. Bullas wines are produced in the municipality of Cehegín, where the Valle del Acheniche is home to deep-rooted Monastrell vines whose grapes have deep notes of Murcian soil. (Click for more information about the Ruta del Vino de Bullas, in which bodegas can be visited and wines purchased directly from the producers).
This route follows the standard format of a tapas route: participants pick up their route map, showing the participating establishments and the tapa they offer. Armed with the map, “taperos” select the dishes would like to try, then set off and find the establishment, order the tapa and ask for the route card to be stamped as proof of purchase. There is no set schedule, people can visit as few or as many establishments as they want to, and the route can be revisited at any time during the promotion.
Participants can vote for the best tapa and enter their route card into a prize draw which will take place at the end of the route.
To enter the prize draw participants must collect 10 stamps on their route cards.
This year the tapas route will coincide with panoramic bus tours and tours of the noble houses of Cehegín, both held at 11.30 on Saturdays and Sundays (book beforehand at the tourist office) and the latter including wine tastings and entitled “Visita las 7 Maravillas de Cehegín…”. In addition, special culinary events will be held in the Escuela del Vino.
Printed route maps can be collected from the tourist office or participating establishments. The tourist office is at Calle López Chicheri, 8, 30430 telephone 968 723550.
