ARCHIVED - Work continues apace to restore the old Ateneo Cultural in Mazarron
The Mazarrón landmark is being renovated and improved to bring it into the 21st century

The restoration works of the Ateneo Cultural in Mazarrón, also known as the Casino, are progressing nicely, according to Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Historical Heritage, Ginés Campillo.
“Now the most cumbersome work has been done, the least visible but the most important to secure the building,” he said of the emblematic Mazarrón landmark.

It has an interesting and eclectic architectural style, and it’s not even known who the architect was or exactly when it was built.

Even the original furniture has been preserved, and will be integrated into the new building once it has been restored.
There is now an elevator to make the building more accessible, and work is underway to add a terrace to the roof which will give views over Mazarrón.

To improve the energy efficiency of the new building, improvements are being made to the thermal insulation on the roof and in the walls, and double glazing will soon be installed throughout.
The new building will also have a new electrical installation, an air conditioning system and a ventilation to ensure adequate indoor air quality.
During a visit by the Deputy Mayor to see the restoration works of the building in progress, the architect in charge of the project, Rafael Pardo, said, “The recovery of the building is progressing as planned, without major incidents and we can already begin to appreciate the importance and splendour of the public building that is being recovered for Mazarrón.”
