ARCHIVED - VIDEO: 5 boats go up in flames in Aguilas port fire
The blaze in the Murcia fishing port quickly spread through the moored vessels
Throngs of onlookers gathered in the fishing port of Águilas on Monday evening, July 4, as a huge fire erupted on the water, scorching five boats before firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Plumes of thick black smoke filled the sky in the popular Murcia municipality and significant damage was caused to the vessels, but thankfully nobody was injured.
According to the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, a fire broke out on a boat shortly after 7.30pm and the flames rapidly jumped to four more vessels moored nearby. The rapid intervention of the fire Extinction Consortium prevented further devastation and the cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
One witness to the dramatic event explained: “We saw smoke in one of the boats, and three boys who were inside had to run away. I called the fire department, and within minutes there were three other boats on fire. The fire spread in a few seconds”.
