ARCHIVED - Use of Covid certificate to get into venues ruled out in Valencia region
Digital certificates won't be used beyond international travel in the region's three provinces, including Alicante, just yet.
President of the Valencian government, Ximo Puig, has ruled out using a Covid certificate for entry into bars and venues, for example, until "vaccines are offered to the entire population".
"Limited access (to the certificate) does not seem right because vaccination cannot yet be guaranteed for everyone", said Puig at a meeting of the Innovation Council on Monday to discuss the possibility of using the so-called European green passport beyond international travel.
The president admitted "it is an option to be analysed calmly", but not before the government has "been able to offer vaccination to the entire population", because otherwise it would "generate a problem of inequality and restrict the rights of people who have not yet received their jabs"
Regarding measures, such as having to present a negative PCR or vaccination certificate to get into restaurants, sports and entertainment venues, Puig expressed similar views, pointing out that again, "it's about equality", arguing that there is a "certain cost involved" with having to buy and present a test, meaning those who have not yet received their vaccine will be financially penalised.
The generalised vaccination of 20 to 29-year-olds began in the region this week in the Valencia region with 105,000 doses expected to be administered before Monday, August 2, and a further 307,615 doses of vaccine are also expected to be given to 30 to 49-year-olds as the government "accelerates" its campaign to achieve the immunisation of 60 per cent of the population by the end of the week.
However, Puig has admitted that there are not enough vaccines to immunise "all the people we would like".
"I wish all the regions had more vaccines and we could all accelerate our objective to the maximum", which, in the case of the Valencian region, is to have vaccinated 80 per cent of the population, aged 12 and over, by October 9.
