USB-C charger: the only one now allowed in the European Union

The law, which was passed in 2022, has come into effect as of December 28

A new European Union (EU) rule that requires all electronic devices to use the same type of charger came into force on Saturday in a move that will not only cut costs, but will also reduce waste.

From this moment on, manufacturers of electronic devices sold in the EU will have to fit their products with a USB-C charging port. The port will be the standard that all 27 countries must follow from now on.

The single charger rule is designed to make life easier for all people in the EU. Furthermore, the change brings down costs because each time a person buys a new device they will not have to buy a new charger.

Ultimately the change will bring to an end the number of useless chargers that people across Europe have when they change their devices.

The EU wrote on X today that "all new mobile phones, tablets, cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other new electronic devices sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port."

Moreover, laptop manufacturers will have an additional period to make the change, but will have only until 2026 to follow suit. Many devices already use this form of USB type charger, but Apple has been reluctant, arguing that such regulations "stifle innovation."

Ten years ago, European electronics makers around the world agreed on a single charger in a voluntary agreement with the European Commission. But Apple refused to abandon its Lightning ports, as was their right before the law came into force.
