UK raises price of entry visa for Europeans days after launch
From April 2, all EU citizens, including people travelling from Spain, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK

On Wednesday April 2, a new system came into place in Britain requiring all EU citizens to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK for short stays of less than six months. This impacts people flying from Spain and includes holidays and business trips.
Essentially, the ETA is required for all Europeans who do not need a visa for short stays or do not already have a UK immigration status. British and Irish citizens as well as people with status under the EU Settlement Scheme do not need an ETA.
The current cost of the ETA when it was introduced was just £10 – a pretty good deal since it allows for multiple trips to the UK within a two-year period or until the person’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
However, with the Easter holidays just around the corner travellers have been dealt a bit of a blow with news that the ETA fee has risen to £16 as of April 9, 2025.
According to the Home Office, this 60% price hike is a result of the UK's efforts to improve its digital immigration system, making it quicker and more secure for the millions of people who pass through the UK border each year.
The ETA is an electronic permit that allows you to travel to the UK. It's not a visa, but rather a prior authorisation to enter the country.
You'll need to apply for an ETA before your trip, at least three days in advance and before buying your tickets. Keep in mind that having an ETA doesn't guarantee entry into the UK, so you'll still need to go through border control when you arrive.
Despite the price increase, applying for an ETA is still a quick and simple process and visitors can find more information on the GOV.UK website.
The introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach taken by other countries, such as the US and Australia, to enhance border security and prevent the arrival of individuals who may pose a threat to the UK.
