ARCHIVED - Two more migrant boats intercepted in Cartagena
A total of 43 illegal migrants, thought to be of Algerian origin, have arrived on the Murcian coast in the last 24 hours
The Region of Murcia continues to experience an influx of illegal immigrants this summer, with a Maritime Rescue crew intercepting three further boats between Monday evening and the early hours of Tuesday off the coast of Cartagena with a total of 43 people on board.
On Monday afternoon, a dinghy was spotted about 10 nautical miles south of Cabo Tiñoso carrying 13 people. It was met by the Salvamar Mimosa patrol boat and escorted to shore to the temporary migrant camp run by the Red Cross at 8:43pm.
Later that same evening, the Salvamar Caliope intercepted a ‘parera’ carrying 15 migrants – 12 men, two women and a minor – 30 miles south of Cabo Tiñoso. They arrived at the Escombreras-Cartagena dock at around 11.15pm, where they were escorted by the National Police to the camp on the southwest dock.
The night was not yet over for the maritime crews, however, as a third vessel was seized in the early hours of Tuesday morning about 0.6 miles off Cabo de Palos. The boat was trying to bring 15 male migrants ashore.
The Government Delegation has reported that all of the migrants are of Algerian origin and appear to be in good health. The next step involves the National Police transferring them to a migrant transit centre to try and establish their identities so they can be repatriated to their country of origin. If the authorities can’t verify their nationalities they will have no choice but to release them.
Authorities have attributed the mild weather and calm seas to the recent surge of illegal immigrants arriving off the coast of Murcia, most often travelling from Algeria, where those seeking to enter Spain illegally pay thousands of euros to organised criminal gangs for their passage. Often, the migrants have to borrow money and end up working in menial jobs at the mercy of the gangs to repay their debt. As the immigrants cannot legally work in Spain, they most often find themselves being exploited for low wages and living in deplorable conditions.
Attempts by the regional government to establish a more permanent migrant camp in Cartagena have been thwarted due to public backlash and so the immigrant problem in Murcia seems set to continue. Indeed, data released earlier this month by the Ministry of the Interior shows that the number of people attempting to enter Spanish and EU territory illegally has risen by 57.7 per cent in the first six months of 2021.
