ARCHIVED - Tropical fruit lorry driver arrested in Cieza 5 times over the alcohol limit
This is the fourth instance of HGV drivers far exceeding the alcohol limit in Murcia this year
A 56-year-old lorry driver from Almuñecar in the province of Granada has been placed under investigation by the Guardia Civil after he was found to be transporting a load of tropical fruit in Cieza, on the RM-714 road between Jumilla and Calasparra in the north of the Region of Murcia, with five times the legal limit for alcohol in his bloodstream.
The driver was halted during his journey from Granada to Valencia after various other road users reported that he was zigzagging dangerously across the road, and two breathalyser tests performed gave readings of 0.76 and 0.73 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air exhaled. The legal limit for professional drivers is just 0.15 milligrams (although for normal road users it is higher at 0.25 mg).
As a result the lorry was immobilized by the Guardia until the following day, by which time the driver was in a fit state to continue his journey, although the man, who has similar offences on his past record, is now under investigation by the courts of Cieza.
This is the fourth case of its kind in the Region of Murcia in 2019, following the detentions of drivers in January on the N-344 in Jumilla, in February on the N-340 in Alhama de Murcia and again in February after the lorry concerned overturned alongside the RM F-25 in San Pedro del Pinatar, shedding its load of mandarins in a roadside ditch.
