ARCHIVED - Tragic death in San Javier as mother sets her disabled daughter on fire
Social services were working to resolve an unsustainable situation between the two when the incident occurred
The mother of a young woman burned in her bed on Wednesday evening in San Javier is to be investigated after confessing to setting fire to the mattress on which her daughter was sleeping.
The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning when neighbours saw smoke coming from the second floor flat inhabited by mother and daughter in Calle Mártires in San Javier and called the 112 services.
.
First to arrive at the scene were local police, who found the mother lying on the floor with a kitchen lighter in her hand.
Her daughter, described as “suffering from an intellectual disability” and “corpulent” was on the floor alongside her bed, conscious and screaming for help.
The officers managed to get her out of the apartment, by which time the fire services had arrived with oxygen and further manual resource, but by the time they had manoeuvered her outside through the dense smoke, she had lapsed into a coma, suffering from second and third degree burns on 30% of her body and face.
The 70 year old mother was treated on the spot for smoke inhalation and was taken to Los Arcos hospital, while the daughter was taken to the burns unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia. She died from her injuries on Thursday.
According to the officers attending the scene, the mother confessed to setting the mattres of her daughter on fire “to wake her up” and subsequently discharged herself from the hospital after treatment for smoke inhalation. She was detained by the police and taken to a secure psychiatric facility for assessment.
The situation was made doubly tragic by the fact that social services and neighbours were fully aware of a tense relationship between the two women and were on the verge of achieving an enforced separation.
Neighbours told the police that the mother had threatened to burn the house and her daughter on numerous occasions and had even set the blankets covering her daughter on fire before, an event filmed by the daughter with a mobile phone.
In November 2019 the disabled association for the Mar Menor, Aidemar, had intervened and the Court of San Javier had admitted a demand from the Public Prosecutor's Office to declare the incapacity of the daughter.
On May 15th, San Javier Council had presented a report to the Cartagena Area Prosecutor's Office requesting precautionary measures to protect the two women and on Monday the department of social services had sent the documentation to the Prosecutor's Office for urgent processing.
The mother has not been diagnosed as suffering from any type of disability, and so the coroner must determine whether she is suffering from dementia or some other condition which could justify her actions and render her unimpeachable and whether or not she can be investigated for the death of her daughter, a process of analysis which must now be undergone by medical professionals.
