ARCHIVED - Thousands enjoy Mazarrón-Bolnuevo romería and the traditional sardine barbecues on the beach
Celebrations of the Miracle of Bolnuevo on Sardine Sunday!
Residents of the municipality of Mazarrón were joined by flocks of visitors on Sunday to celebrate one of the biggest days in the annual calendar, as they took part in the “Romería del Milagro” and accompanied the figure of the Virgen de la Purísima Concepcíon from the town to her sanctuary on the coast in Bolnuevo before lighting their barbecues on the beach to enjoy the traditional “Sardine Sunday”.
The annual fiestas of which Sardine Sunday is the culmination are held to give thanks for the “Miracle of Bolnuevo” on 17th November 1585, when the Virgen is said to have appeared on the coast to turn back a hoard of Berber pirate raiders from northern Africa who were intending to attack Mazarrón. This year, though, the events on Sunday also included topical present-day aspects, as after the walkers made their traditional stop in Las Moreras the figure of the Virgen also stopped at the “Virgen del Milagro” desalination plant which has been named after her, and which has been equipped with pioneering solar panels which will serve to make desalinated irrigation water cheaper for local agriculturalists.
Once in Bolnuevo, though, the Romería resumed its traditional course as the Virgin was carried by her bearers along the sunlit seafront, an open-air Mass was held in her honour and she was returned to the small church of Bolnuevo, where she will remain until next year. Following that, with the weather warmer than had been forecast, everyone made for the beach and gorged on sardines until the early evening.
