ARCHIVED - The “yes-yes” generation grows in Spain as young people both work and study
The number of “no-nos” decreases according to the Active Population Survey
After the economic crisis which began in Spain in 2008 began to take hold there emerged a social phenomenon popularly known as the “ni-ni” generation, consisting of young people who “ni trabajaban ni estudiaban” (neither worked nor studied), an age group caught in no man’s land by the lack of job opportunities in this country a decade ago.
However, an analysis carried out by Randstad of the data contained in recent Active Population Surveys shows that the number of young people falling into this category has fallen significantly over the last 5 years, and that they are gradually being replaced with a new generation who could be referred to as the “sí-sís”.
As recently as 2014 there were 1.6 million people aged under 29 in Spain who neither studied nor worked, and while the most recent total of 1.2 million is still very high it represents a decrease of 26.3 per cent. On the other hand, the number of “sí-sís” (young people who both work and study or take part in training programs) has risen by 41.2 per cent to 671,800, meaning that the group now accounts for around a quarter of all workers aged 29 or under.
Further analysis shows that 53.2 per cent of the Sí-sís are female and that the unemployment rate among the under 30s has fallen by 14.2 points in the last five years to 24.4 per cent.
