ARCHIVED - The UK relaunches its military diplomacy with Spain
Both Spain and Britain hope to maintain security and defence relations post-Brexit
The United Kingdom and Spain have reaffirmed their military commitment this week in what Spanish sources have described as a “milestone” occasion, when the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, with 1,200 sailors on board, carried out a logistics stopover at the Rota military base for the first time.
The Royal Navy requested this stopover some time ago as part of its seven-and-a-half month mission across the Indian Ocean.
In addition, a Royal Air Force Airbus A330 MRTT carried out a five-hour flight over the province of Cuenca on Tuesday November 30 as part of the NATO Tactical Leadership Program.
During the flight, British ambassador Hugh Elliot reiterated that "security and defence relations were very strong before Brexit and will continue to be very strong afterwards, since Brexit has nothing to do with NATO collaboration."
There are many bilateral exchanges between Spain and the UK, and with the exception of 2020, several British ships frequently arrive in Spanish ports. Likewise, the Spanish frigate Christopher Columbus sailed to Scotland in May while the Almirante Juan de Borbon visited the English port of Portsmouth.
“All these joint activities demonstrate the special relationship between our Navies. We are two strong allies in NATO who work very well together", added the ambassador.
This partnership in security and defence is one of the policies that the United Kingdom has re-launched in recent years and it is hoped that as part of the process, an agreement could be reached on Gibraltar. The third round of negotiations between the UK and the EU took place last week in Brussels, and another meeting is scheduled in London later this month.
For all intents and purposes, Madrid and London have already reached an agreement in principle, but the official treaty will have to be endorsed by the EU.
