ARCHIVED - The first new pharmacies in a decade are to be added to the list in the Region of Murcia
12 new chemists will bring the total up to 581, ten per cent open 24 hours a day
Pharmacies are one of the things which we tend to take for granted, knowing with near certainty that they will remain open and in the same place year after year with very little alteration, but it was announced on Tuesday that the distribution of dispensing chemists in the Region of Murcia is to change slightly with the opening of 12 new establishments, the first additions to the service for 10 years.
This will bring the total of pharmacies in the Region up to 581, and the new chemists will be located in Alhama de Murcia, Puente Tocinos (in the municipality of Murcia), the district of San Antón in Cartagena, Roldán (Torre Pacheco), Totana, Caravaca de la Cruz, Jumilla, Archena, the San Diego district of Lorca, and two in Molina de Segura, one in the town centre and the other in the residential areas outside the town.
The Health department of the regional government explains that the additional pharmacies are being created in order to maintain the even spread throughout Murcia as local populations change. Approximately 10 per cent of the 569 already existing chemists are open 24 hours a day and that proportion will remain unchanged, the only difference when the new ones open being that the total of around 62,000 people visiting the pharmacies every day will be slightly more thinly spread.
It should be pointed out that the opening of pharmacies is strictly controlled by the regional health authorities in Murcia, and that qualified chemists cannot open their own establishments at will. They have to compete for the licences which are made available and their applications are assessed on the basis of a series of merits and abilities.
(Note: while the regional government reports that no new chemists have opened for 10 years, in fact new establishments have appeared in the meantime. For example, one opened in Montepinar, a few kilometres north of the city of Murcia, a year ago, but this is essentially a secondary branch of one of the nearby chemists in Cobatillas.)
