ARCHIVED - Spanish Health Minister says quarantine period will not be reduced without solid scientific evidence
The Madrid government, however, has already requested permission to reduce its quarantine period to 7 days
The Spanish Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, has stated that for the moment the time in which close contacts of a positive case of Covid-19 must remain in quarantine will not be modified until there is "solid scientific evidence".
Illa made his statement at a press conference after a meeting held this Wednesday with the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias; and the president of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), Abel Caballero.
"In the protocols that exist in Spain, in certain circumstances quarantines can be reduced to 10 days, although any change made in them must be endorsed by scientific criteria," Illa said.
In recent days, the debate has arisen about the possibility of reducing the quarantine period for close contacts of a Covid-19 case to seven days, as has been established in France.
A week ago, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, acknowledged that the Spanish health authorities are studying the possibility of reducing the quarantine period for Covid-19 from 14 to 10 days, although he ruled out that, for now, it will be reduced to 5 or 7 days.
A few days ago, the Ministry of Health updated its 'Strategy for the early detection, surveillance and control of COVID-19', establishing that the contacts of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 who carry out activities considered essential (health personnel, social health, personnel of the State security forces and bodies or personnel of educational centers) will not have to quarantine if they have a negative PCR.
MADRID PLANS TO REDUCE QUARANTINE TO SEVEN DAYS. The Deputy Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid, Antonio Zapatero, announced this Wednesday that the regional government has sent a request to the Ministry of Health to reduce the duration of quarantines for coronavirus from 14 to 7 days. In his rôle as the person with responsibility for the Covid-19 Plan in the region,he explained that the Madrid government has based this decision on "sanitary criteria" obtained after intensive studies of the virus and its consequences being carried out by experts in the Community.
