ARCHIVED - Spanish government rejects calls for full lockdown again
The government refuses to endorse a single nationwide set of pandemic restrictions
Regional governments continue with different approaches to curb the third wave of contagion
As regional governments throughout Spain tighten up their pandemic restrictions in response to the rising numbers of coronavirus infections, the Ministry of Health in the national government has again rejected demands for permission to re-impose a full lockdown in some of the Autonomous Communities, similar to the nationwide restrictions introduced last March.
The Minister for Territorial Policy, Carolina Darias, recognized on Wednesday that the increase in infections is “important and worrying” and that the situation is one of “extreme risk”, but at the same time the government has yet again declined to allow the confinement of citizens to their homes, despite various regional governments having requested permission to re-introduce this measure. This is despite the latest daily update from the Ministry of Health reporting a further 38,869 confirmed cases in 24 hours, easily surpassing the previous daily record of 25,595 on 30th October.
In addition, during the latest meeting of the national government’s inter-territorial health committee on Wednesday Sra Darias and Salvador Illa, the Minister for Health, ruled out the possibility of introducing a single federal, nationwide protocol for the measures introduced to slow the spread of Covid-19.
In consequence, the measures in place differ widely from one region to another, with different approaches adopted to travel, social gatherings, curfews, bar and restaurant opening and a host of other matters.
On the one hand, the calls for a uniform response across the country are understandable, but it also worth remembering that the current 14-day incidence rates in Spain’s 17 regions differ enormously, ranging from 115 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the Canary Islands to 1,131 in Extremadura. Across the country the third wave of infections is attributed mostly to the “Christmas effect” and possibly also in part to the “British variant” of the virus, and in more than half of the Autonomous Communities pandemic measures have been tightened during the first half of this week.
