ARCHIVED - Snap of bench swallowed up by overgrown bushes in Alicante goes viral
Photos of street furniture devoured by hedges and shrubs in Alicante's San Gabriel neighbourhood are causing a stir on social media
A councillor in Alicante city has sparked controversy on social media after sharing the "shocking" state of the city's green spaces and street furniture in the San Gabriel neighbourhood.
Raúl Ruiz shared an image of a bench literally swallowed up by vegetation in Vía Park near the Barranco de las Ovejas ravine, a photograph he has used to denounce the council's management of green spaces, and the Twitter post has since gone viral.
"Alicante suffers the consequences of years of inability... to provide a decent service in our green areas," wrote the councillor, prompting plenty of comments and shares, along with photographs shared by frustrated residents showing bins engulfed in bushes taken in the same area of the city.

The post is a swipe at Alicante Mayor, Luis Barcala, who is accused of "abandoning" parks and neglecting the maintenance needs of the San Gabriel neigbourhood, but as yet, he hasn't responded to the images or claims on social media.
