ARCHIVED - Slightly cooler weekend ahead as heatwave abates: Spain weather forecast August 5-7
Several heat warnings remain in place while some areas of Spain are expecting stormy episodes this weekend
Spain’s third heatwave of the year, which began on July 30 and saw many parts of the country exceed 40ºC on a daily basis, is expected to officially come to an end on Friday August 5, but this in no way means that the thermometers will cool down.
On the contrary, the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns that “although during the second half of this week there will be slight temperature drops, for the next 15 days unusually high temperatures are expected in large areas of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.”
In addition to the scorching land temperatures, the tepid southerly wind crossing the Mediterranean Sea has produced “spectacular anomalies in the surface temperature of the water”, bumping the mercury up to an impossible 30ºC. This is hot enough to be classified as a marine heatwave, which could prove disastrous for the ecosystem and result in more DANAs and torrential storms in the autumn.
For now though, most of Spain won’t have to worry about bad weather, although parts of the Valencian Community, Aragon and Catalonia are on alert on Friday August 4 for heavy rain. The rest of the country is in for a slight cloudy or clear day, with temperatures generally exceeding 35ºC in much of the south.
Minimum and minimum temperatures on Friday:
Alicante: 25ºC min; 33ºC max
Almeria: 26ºC; 35ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 32ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 37ºC
The weather is expected to be much the same on Saturday August 5 with very little change in either day or night-time temperatures. Strong storms are forecast for Catalonia and Aragón once more but elsewhere the day will be bright and sunny with a slight south-easterly wind.
Minimum and minimum temperatures on Saturday:
Alicante: 24ºC min; 34ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC; 34ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 37ºC
There are no weather warnings currently in place for Sunday August 7, although isolated stormy intervals are again predicted in the Pyrenees. Any clouds that appear in the morning will clear as the day goes on and the mercury will hardly budge compared to the previous few days.
Minimum and minimum temperatures on Sunday:
Alicante: 24ºC min; 33ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC; 33ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 37ºC
