ARCHIVED - Sharp rise in supermarket sales of beer, crisps and chocolate during the coronavirus lockdown
Spaniards resume their normal social habits but do so at home rather than in bars and cafés
A report compiled by the Spanish consumer magazine Inforetail reveals that among the few companies to benefit from the coronavirus pandemic in this country are the manufacturers of beer, wine, stuffed olive, crisps, chocolate, anchovies and ice-cream!
In some cases their export sales may have taken a severe hit, but now that the initial run on toilet roll in supermarkets is over these are the products showing the largest sales increases across the country as those confined to their homes seek comfort foods and those which perhaps re-create the feeling that they are in their neighbourhood bar or café as they video-chat with family and friends: flour sales have also soared as people set up their own tapas bar stocks at home!
After the panic buying which saw toilet roll shelves and others completely empty in supermarkets all over the country in the days prior to the announcement of a national state of emergency on 14th March, the Inforetail survey finds that in the first fortnight of lockdown flour sales have risen by an incredible 196 per cent, while other significant increases include those related to beer (77.7 per cent), wine (62.7 per cent), other alcoholic drinks (36.6 per cent), olives (93.8 per cent), crisps (87 per cent), ice-cream (76 per cent) and tinned anchovies (60 per cent).
Psychologists are of the opinion that these consumer trends reflect both the need to recreate social surroundings and the well-documented reliance on “comfort foods” in times of stress. But at the same time, it probably also has something to do with people having overstocked other products at around the time the lockdown began, and beginning to treat themselves to snacks and drinks as they become accustomed to the social isolation which has become mandatory since mid-March.
Nutritional experts might disagree, but in general the psychologists are of the opinion that such shopping is a good thing as it demonstrates that people are accepting the lockdown and establishing certain routines which they treat as normality: they are falling back on the social habits they have in normal circumstances, but doing so at home rather than in hostelries.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
