ARCHIVED - Severe weather alerts all over Spain, 80 cm of snow forecast in 48 hours in the north
Red alerts in the north on Thursday for 40 centimetres of snow and 10-metre waves
Alerts for bad weather have been issued by Aemet on Thursday in 37 of Spain’s 50 provinces as the effects of Storms Bernardo and Cecilia spread across the Iberian Peninsula, with the severest warnings being for snowfalls of 40 centimetres in the mountains of the Picos de Europa and waves of 10 metres on the coast of Galicia in the far north-west.
In the province of León and the region of Asturias the forecast is for over 80 centimetres of snow in two days at altitudes of over 800 metres, while orange alerts are in place in the region of Cantabria and the provinces of Ávila, Burgos, Palencia, Segovia, Zamora, Lleida and Lugo for snowfalls of 20 centimetres or more. Yellow snow alerts for falls of 5 cm are in place in the whole of the Basque Country, Madrid and as far south as Jaén, while at the same time there are 14 warnings of “coastal phenomena” and 30 for strong winds, including almost the whole of the Region of Murcia.
The anticipated conditions differ from region to region, but one constant feature is the sharp drop in temperatures as the figures plummet to levels usually associated with late December. This will bring the snow line down to 700 metres above sea level in the north, 800 metres in central Spain and around 1,000 metres in the south and in the Balearics, with significant snowfalls expected in Mallorca and Granada as well as Jaén.
There is even the off-chance of light snow flurries in the north-west of the Region of Murcia, where on the coast maximums reached 27 degrees on Wednesday!
