San Pedro del Pinatar is building a stunning new viewpoint over its famous flamingo lagoons
An accessible elevated platform will look out over flamingos, herons and the stunning Salinas Regional Park

Very soon, visitors will be able to enjoy an unprecedented panoramic view of the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park. The town is building a brand new elevated viewing platform overlooking the lagoons and it's due to open by the end of May.
The structure will sit on the Avenida del Puerto boulevard, close to the Lodomar Hotel, and has been designed with a winding ramp that winds up through the existing trees to reach a platform two and a half metres above the ground. From up there, visitors will have an open, elevated view across the salt lagoons and the colonies of flamingos, herons and other birds that make this wetland one of the most important natural spaces on the Costa Cálida.
According to the Spanish Ornithological Society, the Salinas supports up to 60 different bird species, using the area as a feeding and resting stop during migration.
The platform has been designed with accessibility in mind throughout, with a wheelchair-friendly ramp and enough space for up to 46 people at a time.
The project has been funded through European Next Generation funds as part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination programme, and represents an investment of €143,874.
Elsewhere in San Pedro del Pinatar, the town is also tidying up its streets in a rather different way. The local government has given Telefónica the green light to remove 118,374 metres of old copper cabling and the poles that carry it, many of which have been cluttering footpaths and creating obstacles for pedestrians for years.
The company has six months to complete the work and must repair any damage to the pavement along the way.
And finally, the local police force is getting a new piece of kit, with the council approving the purchase of 47 JPX incapacitating pistols. These are non-lethal devices that fire a concentrated pepper spray charge, giving officers a way to deal with threatening situations without resorting to live fire.
