ARCHIVED - San Pedro del Pinatar cancels all acts relating to the Virgen del Carmen and Fiestas of San Pedro
The risks are too high when the festivities attract such a large number of participants
Although the decision had already been taken in April to suspend the major events within the annual celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and Fiestas of patron saint, san Pedro in the municipality, it was decided this week that all events would be cancelled in order to minimise the risk of attracting large crowds and endangering the public.
Mayoress of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, councillors for festivities, Javier Castejón, and tourism, Silvia Egea, met with all of the various bodies involved in running the fiestas and took the decision to cancel everything for 2020.
A few religious acts will continue, albeit with limited capacity, and a campaign run in social networks to celebrate the traditions of the fiestas “virtually.”
This week Lorca also announced the suspension of the region’s largest artisan event, Feramur this year.
It’s going to be a pretty dry summer for festivities this year, as every major event which normally fills the summer calendar has now been cancelled.
The regional culture department has promised a few open-air cultural events, details of which will be published nearer the time.
