ARCHIVED - Ryanair cancels dozens of UK to Spain flights between January and March
The company blames the UK and Irish governments for their handling of coronavirus vaccine roll-outs and the latest batch of lockdowns.
Ryanair has been highly critical of the manner in which the British and Irish Governments have handled the coronavirus pandemic throughout the crisis and has consistently criticised the lack of support shown for the travel sector, one of the worst-affected sectors hit by the pandemic. At the end of the last week it turned its attention to the vaccine roll-out and the latest round of lock-downs, and has subsequently announced that dozens of flights from these two countries are being cancelled.
Although feisty press releases are a regular part of the Ryanair press repertoire, this threat “has wings” and dozens of readers have reported the cancellation of their flights to Spain between 21st January and the end of March within the last few hours.
The company said:
“All affected customers will receive an email notification and they will be offered practical alternatives including a free move or refund if they so wish.
A small number of flights will operate to/from the UK primarily to facilitate UK passengers stranded abroad and to support passengers who need to travel for essential reasons. For passengers (booked on these operating flights) who do not wish to travel prior to 31st Jan 2021, Ryanair will facilitate a flight change, where no change fee will apply (any difference in fare will be charged), to any new date up to 30th April 2021. Any passenger whose flight has been cancelled can also move to these operating flights, subject to availability.
All flight changes can be made directly on Ryanair.com”
Ryanair has confirmed that it will "significantly cut" services from Thursday 21st January, the result being that "few, if any, flights would operate to/from Ireland or the UK from the end of Jan".
The company said lockdowns were to blame and that the cuts would remain until "such time as these draconian travel restrictions are removed".
Ryanair's statement added: "All customers affected by these further flight cancellations and further travel restrictions will receive emails advising them of their entitlements of free moves and/or refunds later today."
The company continued: "These new cutbacks will reduce full year (FY March '21) traffic forecast from currently 'below 35 million' to between 26 million to 30 million passengers.
"Ryanair does not expect these flight cuts and further traffic reductions will materially affect its net loss for the year to 31 March 2021 since many of these flights would have been loss making."
Other holiday giants have also cancelled flights and holidays from the UK in the early part of 2021, including TUI and easyJet.
With the UK travel ban in place until the middle of February and Spain currently only permitting residents of the country to enter, the scenario is bleak for UK operators, and it’s only logical that flight operators should be cancelling flights when so many readers are reporting arriving home on a plane with more crew than passengers on board.
We just have to hope that the low-cost airlines survive this crisis with their high operating costs, as so many of us depend on their cheap flights as a bridge between families split between Spain and the UK.
