Road improvement work coming soon to the RM-E35 in San Ginés and La Azohía
It is not yet known when the €17,000 project will begin, nor how long it will take
A project has just been greenlit to upgrade and improve the RM-E35 road in the municipality of Cartagena, along the entire section between kilometre point 0+000 and 3+128 connecting the residential area of San Ginés with La Azohía, halfway between Cartagena city and Puerto de Mazarrón.
The RM-E35, with a total length of just over three kilometres, starts at the intersection with the RM-E22 road and ends at Calle Valle del León in La Azohía.
Currently, the road surface is in poor condition, with cracks, patches and poorly sealed repair work from fixes carried out over the years. There are also quite a few uneven sections and unmarked parking areas, making it a tricky stretch of road to navigate.
Locals have been calling for comprehensive repairs to the road for years. In June 2024, at the Isla Plana-La Azohía plenary session Diego Aragón Soto, spokesperson for the Movimiento Ciudadano de Cartagena party, presented a motion requesting improvements to the road, but it was rejected at the time.
Now, the project has finally been given the go-ahead. Cartagena’s Department of Infrastructure has stated that the project will carry a total cost of €17,587.29, but for now they have not specified when work will begin, when it is expected to be finished nor what access options motorists will have available to them while the work is going on.
Presumably one lane of traffic will provisionally be closed at a time to allow cars to pass, but at this stage it is only speculation.
