ARCHIVED - Record wave of 5.8 metres at the port of Cabo de Palos as storm damage affects the Cartagena coastline
Storm damage on the Mediterranean and Mar Menor coastlines of Cartagena
As Storm Gloria continues to affect the Region of Murcia on Monday afternoon the Town Hall of Cartagena has reported various damage to infrastructures along the shore of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean in Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Playa Honda, La Manga and Cabo de Palos, where the highest ever wave of 5.86 metres was measured on Monday.
Strong winds, rough seas and heavy rain have all hit the Campo de Cartagena on Sunday and Monday but fortunately the damage is mostly restricted to street furniture and pine and palm trees. Among the 368 incidents related to the storm which have been reported to the regional 112 emergency services call centre many of them are in this area, especially in La Manga del Mar Menor and Cabo de Palos, where rubbish containers, advertising hoardings and bins have been blown away and traffic lights have been blown down. One of the palm trees felled by the wind damaged the Policía Local building alongside the port of Cabo de Palos.
On the beaches, meanwhile, serious damage is reported to various Protección Civil lifeguard and lookout platforms, in Playa Honda lamp posts and trees crashed to the ground and between Playa Honda and Playa Paraíso at least 10 pine trees have fallen victim to gusts of wind which reached 100 km/h just a few kilometres to the north in San Javier.
