ARCHIVED - Public opinion survey identifies the Mar Menor as the second most serious issue in Murcia
The recent deterioration in the lagoon has raised awareness of the problem enormously
The drastic deterioration in the marine environment of the Mar Menor has raised awareness of the critical situation of the lagoon to the point where it is now the second most worrying current issue for the population of Murcia, according to the latest monthly survey performed by the regional public opinion studies centre Cemop.
Top of the list, as ever, is the problem of unemployment, which is reported to be the major source of concern to 30 per cent of those questioned, but the issue of the Mar Menor has burst into the consciousness of the Murcianos and was named by 15.7 per cent of the members of the public taking part. Following the flooding caused by the gota fría storm in September and the episode of anoxia (lack of oxygen) which resulted in tons of dead fish and crustaceans washing up on Mar Menor beaches in October a mass demonstration calling for solutions was held in Cartagena on 30th October, and clearly the frustration at the lack of action being taken is affecting the opinions of the population.
While the issue of the Mar Menor has entered the list of most pressing worries for the first time in the autumn survey it may be no coincidence that the rating achieved by “politicians, political parties and politics in general” has also shot up from 8.6 per cent to 14.3 per cent, although this must also be related to the continuing inability of Spain’s political leaders to form a new national government.
Also featured in the list are the economy (4.5 per cent), the lack of quality employment (3.7 per cent) and problems related to agriculture (3.5 per cent).
