ARCHIVED - Petrol station strikes for Thursday and Monday called off
Industrial action had threatened long weekend travel plans in Spain
The strikes which had been threatened by unions representing workers at petrol stations all over Spain on Thursday 5th and Monday 9th December have been called off, removing the risk of disruption to motorists heading away from home to enjoy the long holiday weekend.
The announcement was made after negotiations produced an increase in the pay rise offer made by management organization CEEES, from the 1.3 per cent for 2019 which the UGT and CCOO unions had described as “insufficient” to 1.5 per cent, which is referred to as “satisfactory”. Taking into account the low inflation rate in Spain at present this effectively means that workers at petrol stations will be around 1 per cent better off as a result of the deal.
Prior to the cancellation of the strikes UGT had complained that these pay rises were insufficient for the 56,000 people working at 11,000 filling stations across the country and were disproportionate to the constant rise in sales over recent years.
It should be remembered that in 8 of Spain’s 17 regions Monday 9th December is holiday as well as Friday 6th, with the feast day of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday being held back for an extra day off work, hence the especially disruptive nature of the strikes which had been proposed for weekend travel plans.
