ARCHIVED - No major incidents during storms in the Region of Murcia on Monday
The storm caused localised flooding in Águilas and Puerto Lumbreras, a fallen tree in Murcia, and brought a hail storm to Mazarrón
With the entire Region of Murcia upgraded to an orange alert level for much of Monday, July 26, it is fortunate that the storm caused only minor problems overall. Data from the Emergency Coordination Centre shows that the service responded to a total of 112 calls before 7pm regarding incidents caused by the heavy rain, with the vast majority relating to the removal of fallen objects that were obstructing public roads.
Despite the fact that officials warned residents early in the day not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary, there were seven call-outs to rescue people from vehicles trapped in the downpour, thankfully none of them serious.
By municipalities, Mazarrón was the most affected with 30 incidents, followed by Puerto Lumbreras (17) and Murcia (11). According to the State Meteorological Agency, in Puerto Lumbreras 68.8 litres per square meter were recorded between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, with a staggering 23 mm in just ten minutes at one point.
In Murcia there were several reports of fallen tree branches, including one on Infante Juan Manuel Avenue in the city and another on Calle Alcalde Juan López Somalo, on Paseo de Corvera.
The hail storms were heaviest in Mazarrón and Fuente Álamo, while in Caravaca de la Cruz, 24 litres per square metre fell in just half an hour.
Elsewhere Calasparra both received 24mm; Mazarrón 21mm including heavy hail; Fuente Álamo 14mm; Alhama 7mm; Cartagena 3mm and Murcia city only 1mm.
Councillor of Citizen Security, Felipe García, praised the authorities for their forethought in closing off sections of road known to be prone to flooding, such as La Costera and Ginés Campos Avenue, and thus avoiding more serious incidents throughout the day. The number of firefighters on active duty during the storm in the region was also increased from 40 to 70.
