ARCHIVED - New footbridge will provide direct access to Alicante beach
75,000 euros is being invested in a new walkway at Albufereta beach on the Costa Blanca
A new footbridge will be contructed at Alicante's Albufereta beach over the next three months to provide a direct route to the sand for residents and tourists alike, in particular people with reduced mobility.
Following repeated requests from the local residents' association for improvements at the popular beach, the existing walkway will be replaced with a more modern, accessible and sustainable footbridge, which is expected to last "up to 50 years and improve access to the beach and the pedestrian connection between the two neighbourhoods separated by the Orgegia ravine," explained the city council.
The project is expected to take three months at a cost of 75,000 euros.
Elsewhere in the city, more than 50,000 euros will be spent replacing road and pavement surfaces and improving accessibility in Calle Duque de Rivas, between Calle Caja de Ahorros and Avenida Albufereta, over the next few months, to provide "greater safety for pedestrians":
A similar scheme will be carried out at the intersections in calles Andalucía, Concha Espina and Albufereta.
"The aim is to ensure that Alicante's streets, squares and pavements can be used by everyone with equal opportunities, and to do this, we must fix the flaws which include broken pavements, missing tiles, broken bollards and damaged fencing, to achieve better urban accessibility and eliminate barriers for people with disabilities," explained the local authority.
