ARCHIVED - Murcia proposes creating safe routes and spaces for women
Murcia city council plans to identify ‘black spots’ in the city and make them safer for women walking alone
Unfortunately, many women across the world are familiar with the frightening feeling of walking home alone down a dark alley or a street with little foot traffic. To combat the issue and prevent possible attacks, Murcia city council have put forward a proposal to find ‘black spots’ where women may feel unsafe in the city and create secure routes.
The initiative, which is part of the REVAction project, would serve to identify dark or solitary streets, as well as roads with no pavements for pedestrians, and increase lighting in these areas, as well as involving neighbours and different groups and association in the creation of safe routes for women.
Some of these possible ‘black spots’ in the city are the Murcia Río area, the La Fica area, the back alleys of Mercado de Verónicas and some streets in Santa Eulalia neighbourhood.
Murcia have proposed the initiative to the European Commission, who will decide if the project is selected to receive funding sometime next month.
Another proposal which is part of the REVAction project is the creation of ‘Spaces for Women’, which would serve as information, training, prevention and support points, combining all kinds of necessary resources in one place. These spaces would also have resources to help victims of domestic abuse and sexist crimes with long and complicated administrative and bureaucratic processes.
Elsewhere in the Region of Murcia, the municipality of Archena has constructed a feminist mural, which showcases 15 of the most important historic female figures in the fight for equal rights. Local residents and visitors of all ages and genders have helped to paint the mural, which is almost complete.
