ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid update July 20: Hospital admissions in the Region skyrocket
In the grip of the fifth wave of coronavirus, ICU admissions have also increased
The upsurge in coronavirus cases in the Region of Murcia in recent weeks has begun to be reflected in hospital admissions, with the Ministry of Health reporting on Tuesday that 63 people have been hospitalised in the past 24 hours, up from 45 the day before, representing the highest figure since June 1. ICU admissions have also soared, with 11 patients now occupying intensive care beds.
Those who have been admitted to the ICU are all aged between 33 and 52 years, and none have been vaccinated, with the exception of one individual who has received a first dose.
The cumulative incidence rate over the past 14 days in the Region of Murcia now stands at 277.92 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and while this is far from ideal, it is still more than half the overall average for Spain, which has reached 599.69. The data shows that Murcia now has the second-lowest cumulative incidence rate in the country, second only to Castilla La Mancha (216.11), while the Valencian Community has shot up to 484.76 after weeks of having the lowest numbers. Likewise, Andalucía has risen to 395.62.
Within the Region of Murcia, the municipalities of Cartagena, Mazarron and San Pedro del Pinatar currently have some of the highest cumulative incidence rates.
The trend continues with the number of new infections: the latest data from the Epidemiology Service of the Ministry of Health showing that 394 positive cases were recorded on Monday, up 155 from Sunday. On a positive note, the experts have suggested that the increase is down to more PCR and antigen tests being carried, as the percentage of positives is actually down by two points to 8.3 per cent compared with Sunday.
Of the 394 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours, 95 occurred in the municipality of Murcia, 55 in Cartagena, 19 in Yecla and 14 in both Lorca and San Pedro del Pinatar. The rest of the infections were spread throughout the remaining municipalities.
The most tragic news of the day for the Murcia region is that a 29-year-old man has died from Covid, making him the youngest victim since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
As the national government continues to push the immunisation campaign, Spain has now become the third EU country to have fully vaccinated more than half its population.
