ARCHIVED - Murcia begins extensive coronavirus testing, experts expect the effects of lockdown to become apparent this week
10 more coronavirus fatalities in Murcia but the number of confirmed active cases fell on Monday
The daily evening update regarding the spread of the coronavirus in the Region of Murcia on Monday again provided indications that the pandemic may be being brought under control during the fourth week of the emergency lockdown, although 10 more fatalities (6 of them former residents of homes for the elderly) brought the total in the Region up to 78.
The rising death toll cannot be ignored, but at the same time neither can the evidence that a plateau is being reached in the spread of the virus in Murcia. The number of confirmed active cases fell by 22 during the day to 1,012 (discounting patients given the all-clear and those who have made a full recovery), while the number of patients in intensive care units also dropped slightly to 51.
There have now been a total of 1,283 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Murcia since the emergency began (just 24 more than on Sunday), and the widely voiced opinion of experts is that a change in the general trend of the pandemic is expected this week. This does not mean, however, that the lockdown is about to be lifted as the risk of a second wave of contagion is a very real one, and there is a strong likelihood that many more cases will come to light over the next few days as over 42,000 rapid testing kits are put to use, with priority being given to those most at risk – primarily, healthcare and medical workers, residents and staff in homes for the elderly and the forces of law and order.
37 patients were given the all-clear on Monday, bringing the total up to 193, and Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the Murcia government, also highlights other data which point to a gradual improvement in the situation. The number of new “possible” cases being monitored over the last five days averages out at 215 per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 5 days as opposed to 451 the week before, and data produced by the national Carlos III health institute in Madrid reveal that the basic reproduction rate (RO) in the region is down to 0.68, the fourth lowest in Spain’s 17 regions.
Other data contained in the latest update include the fact that of the 1,283 cases detected so far exactly 283 have been healthcare workers in the public and private sectors, 88 of them nurses and 59 doctors. At the same time, 527 cases have been recorded in the municipality of Murcia, 149 in Cartagena, 59 in Molina de Segura and 26 in Lorca.
Manuel Villegas also stated that his department is working to ensure that facemasks become more widely available to members of the public and that the regional health service (SMS) has acquired 51 more respirators since the arrival of the pandemic in Spain, now having 436 at their disposal. Delivery is awaited of a further 88.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
