ARCHIVED - Motorists trapped overnight as Catalan separatist demonstrators block the AP-7 motorway again
Continuing disruption as barricades are erected and burnet across major roads in Catalunya
The Policía Nacional and the Mossos d’Esquadra (the regional police force of Catalunya) took part in a joint operation on Wednesday morning to unblock the AP-7 motorway close to the city of Girona, where pro-independence demonstrators formed barricades and refused to leave despite the protest having been declared over by the “Tsunami Democràtic” group.
When the motorway was abruptly blocked on Tuesday afternoon hundreds of drivers were unexpectedly trapped on the AP-7, unable to move forwards or backwards, and many spent the night in their vehicles, sleeping in their cars, chatting among each other and bemoaning their ill luck. For some of them a 20-minute journey home after work being became a 16-hour ordeal in uncomfortable conditions on the tarmac (with blankets, food and drink provided by Protección Civil), and some people opted to simply abandon their vehicles where they stood and make their way home by other means.
Unconfirmed reports claim that the air was let out of the tyres of some of the cars by the protesters, and the latest disruption comes after French police employed tear gas to break up demonstrators on the border on Sunday night.
On Wednesday morning the anti-disturbance” squads of the Policía and the Mossos managed to clear the road in under half an hour, but some of the demonstrators moved on to the nearby town of Salt and began to set up more barricades in what is rapidly becoming an uncontrolled and continuous disruption of normal life in the province of Girona. Those behind the organized disruption warn that they will continue with their protests until amnesties are granted to 40 “political prisoners” who are currently being held in prison.
To give an idea of the scale of the unrest, roads were also blocked on Tuesday night in the centre of Barcelona, on the AP-7 in the province of Tarragona, and on other major trunk roads including the C-25 in Barcelona, the A-2 in Fornells de la Selva (Girona), the A-27 in Tarragona and the N-152 and N-154 in Puigcerdà (Girona).
