ARCHIVED - More than 3,000 firearms were destroyed in Murcia last year
9th July is International Gun Destruction Day
During the last year the Guardia Civíl destroyed a total of 86,566 weapons in Spain, 3,493 of which were confiscated in the Murcia region.
852 of the weapons from Murcia are small firearms and more than 2,000 long-barrel shotguns and rifles.
Some of the weapons are confiscated as their owners lack the necessary certification and others are seized by the Guardia during criminal investigations.
Public auctions are held to sell-off some of the firarms such as hunting rifles, but anything not sold at auction or considered to be a dangerous firearm is destroyed and reduced to scrap metal.
On the 9th July every year the United Nations holds International Gun Destruction Day to promote the action of destroying illicit firearms, rather than stockpiling them.
IANSA,International Action network on Small Arms says “there are more than one billion firearms in the world, the vast majority of which are in civilian hands.
Global arsenals have increased over the past decade, fueling crime, conflict, gender-based violence, forced migration and more. Stockpiling weapons costs more than destroying surpluses. It also creates a high risk of diversion into illegal markets.
July 9th is a day to remind our governments of the importance of destroying surplus weapons as a vital measure to reduce the proliferation of small arms.”
