ARCHIVED - Mazarrón police clamp down on illegal foreign vehicles
The campaign targets drivers on the Camposol and Country Club Urbanisations in the Mazarrón municipality
Mazarrón police have announced that they are initiating a clampdown on the two urbanisations inhabited by the majority of expat vehicle owners and drivers within the municipality.
During the week the local police have been highly visible undertaking a new traffic and surveillance operation on the urbanisations, issuing a number of warnings to vehicle owners and in some cases, fining drivers for major traffic offences on the spot.
In the past little attention has been paid to drivers of foreign plated vehicles, the result being that there are vehicles which are conspicuously illegal, owners failing to replate vehicles which have been in Spain for considerably longer than the legal period for re-registration and which consequently lack legal insurance and taxation.
While Camposol can hardly be described as the Wild West, there have been incidents which have highlighted the need for greater vigilance such as that recently in which a driver alleged to have consumed over the legal limit of alcohol flattened a lamp-post at the bottom of the dual carriageway on Sector C.
The UK plated vehicle was subsequently found to have neither Tax not M.O.T, the former having expired in 2017 and the latter in 2018, so this vehicle was unceremoniously removed from the urbanisation on the back of a police tow truck.
Police are keen to spread the message that all vehicles driven by expat owners should be legally plated, legally insured and legally taxed in order to comply with Spanish road traffic regulations and ensure the safety of other road users.
The message posted on social media by the police says it all "No tax. Don´t drive."
