ARCHIVED - Mazarrón markets return to food only format
This should hopefully restrict the number of shoppers and prevent overcrowding
Mazarrón council has published an order limiting its street markets to vendors of food and essential products only as part of measures to limit the spread of coronavirus.
This means that the markets will return to the format used during lockdown, with food vendors only.
Although this can lead to long queues at the market stalls, it’s infinitely safer than had been the case for the last few weeks, when shoppers had returned to their habitual practices of taking the whole family along, forgetting to respect any form of social distancing and jostling other shoppers in order to get served a bit quicker!
Personally, the Ed. actually took the decision to shop shopping at the habitual Sunday market in the port about a month ago as it was becoming uncomfortably crowded, and had become a bit of a nerve-wracking free-for-all for anybody trying to maintain social distancing, so this is a good decision.
I myself don´t enjoy the queueing and not being able to select my own produce when the markets follow this format, but it is prefereable to being forced to buy veg in plastic packaging from the supermarkets if you take your own plastic bags back to re-use at the markets.
It’s advisable to arrive as early as possible, limit purchases to the minimum number of stalls and be patient. The addition of a partner who can be parked in a queue with a list is particularly useful!
