ARCHIVED - Mazarrón Covid incidence continues to skyrocket as mayor calls for another curfew
Mazarrón has the highest Covid rate in the region
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, requested on Monday that the Regional Ministry of Health implement a curfew in the municipality from 2 am to 6 am in order to curb the worrying rise in Covid cases, yet the rate in the municipality continues to rise dramatically, with no sign that his request has been noted.
The mayor stated that the situation is "very worrying", suggesting that the problem is with unvaccinated young people socialising without following the Covid safety rules and regulations in place.
The latest Covid update published on July 14, reports another significant increase in the 14-day accumulated incidence rate in Mazarrón, which now stands at 514.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, having risen significantly in the last 7 days. In addition, the 7-day rate has soared to 292.3.
In practice, this means that the number of cases reported during the last seven-day period has been higher than during the previous seven day period, so therefore the incidence rate is continuing to increase.
The region has an average rate of 199.4 over 14 days, which has climbed from under 50 within the last month.
From Friday (July 16) Covid vaccinations will begin for those aged between 20 and 29.
However, on Monday, the regional health authorities also took the decision to leave Mazarrón at level 3, rather than moving it to level 4, as should have been the case at the weekly meeting of the covid monitoring committee.
The committee stated that the decision had been taken in order to ensure that the businesses working in the hostelry sector were able to continue working and make-up for the revenue lost during the pandemic. The regional health minister stated that the outbreaks in the three municipalities which should have moved to level 4 (Mazarrón, Torre Pacheo and Librilla) were localised and under control.
The local council is calling for the regional government to take further measures and re-impose a curfew.
