ARCHIVED - Mass vaccination of Mar Menor residents continues
Next week the campaign will focus on those aged 70-74 for Pfizer vaccinations
Although the Murcia region has received significantly less vaccines than had been scheduled for delivery this week due to a combination of the Janssen vaccine not being sent as scheduled due to concerns about safety issues and the 60 per cent reduction in the delivery sent by AstraZeneca to Spain this week, the Murcia region had nearly 100,000 vaccines in stock which had not yet been administered as of Tuesday evening.
As a result, the scheduled AstraZeneca vaccines for the population aged between 60 and 64 years of age in the Mar Menor area were able to go ahead as planned on Wednesday.
Vaccinations are being carried out in a marquee in the recinto ferial of San Javier, with those aged between 60 and 64 from San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares, all being called to this one central point in order to maximise the use of resources and cut back on the logistical support required to deliver vaccines to smaller venues around the three municipalities.
This has provoked complaints from Los Alcázares town hall which is not happy that its residents are being forced to travel to San Javier for their vaccines and has called for vaccination points to be set up in its own health centres.
By 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday a total of 2,200 people had been vaccinated from the 3,500 who had been given an appointment.
The roll-out proceeded smoothly, the main problem being members of the public arriving early for their appointments and causing a queue to form outside.
The rate of vaccination inside the marquee was in line with expectations at 100 vials every 15 minutes.
According to the forecasts of the regional health authorities, the marquee will reopen its doors next Thursday, April 22, when about 3,000 people between 70 and 74 years old will be summoned to receive their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
The authorities are keen to stress that appointments will be given and the public should not turn up for a vaccine unless they have been called.
This week there have problems caused by fake messages circulating on social media in both Murcia and Cartagena calling the public to go along for vaccines without appointments; the health authorities stress yet again that this type of message are always fakes and that they will NOT summon the public in this fashion, appointments will always be confirmed in advance ona one-to-one basis.
As of Wednesday evening, 293,702 vaccinations had been administered in the Murcia region, with 99,986 people fully immunised with two doses and 193,716 people having received at least one dose.
The total population of Murcia is just under 1.5 million people.
