ARCHIVED - Maritime Rescue and the Red Cross host rescue drills for divers in Cabo de Palos
The Region of Murcia has a significant number of diving clubs and the 'Balky 2021' exercise in Cabo de Palos is an important training simulation
The Red Cross and Maritime Rescue Services of the Murcia region held their annual 'Balky 2021' training exercise on July 14 in Cabo de Palos for all those who could potentially be involved in an underwater rescue following a diving accident.
The simulated training drill, coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Cartagena, consisted of rescuing a group of divers who 'suffered a hyperbaric accident' after a dive to a depth of 50 metres.
The scenario was that the group had ascended too quickly and needed to be evacuated urgently to a hyberbaric chamber.
As the participants in the simulation took up their roles, the drill showed some of those affected being rescued by the Red Cross boats LS Selene and LS Esperanza and others by the Salvamar Mimosa, while two of them (the affected diver and his companion) were rescued by the Helimer 215 and transferred to the nearest hyperbaric chamber.
In addition to the Red Cross and Maritime Rescue, the Civil Guard (GEAS), Emergencias 112 Murcia, Local Police of Cartagena and Balkysub-Diving School all participated in the exercise.
