ARCHIVED - Mar Menor hotels freeze prices to attract more tourists this summer
Businesses in the Mar Menor are scrambling to guarantee a strong season as the lagoon continues to deteriorate
Hotels in the Mar Menor area of Murcia have decided to freeze their prices this summer in a desperate effort to attract foreign and national tourists, after a wave of cancellations because of the state of the lagoon have threatened to damage the upcoming season.
Last week, in a scene eerily similar to the devastation of August 2021, hundreds of dead fish washed up on the shores of San Javier, and hoteliers have been scrambling to ensure that the Mar Menor remains attractive to visitors.
The prices of hotel rooms and restaurants in the Region have already risen by 6.1% in recent months, but despite this Murcia remains one of the cheapest holiday destinations in Spain.
And while the Mar Menor sees dedicated holidaymakers returning to their favourite spots year after year, the president of the Cartagena Hotel Association, Bartolomé Vera, has warned that tourists won’t hesitate to choose a new destination if prices go up.
“They will come, but if the price is high, it will not be worth it for them,” he said, pointing out that between Covid and previous episodes of hypoxia in the lagoon, the tourist season has been greatly shortened for the last three years.
As a consequence, the focus has been placed on freezing the cost of hotel rooms, primarily because “hotel customers are the ones who really spend money in restaurants and shops, because visitors who rent a second home go to buy at Mercadona and eat in their house”.
Murcia has always been a firm favourite with holidaymakers from Madrid, but the closure of the train line between Cartagena and Archena throws up another obstacle, since tourists travelling to the Mar Menor from the Spanish capital are now forced to take two trains and a bus to reach their destination.
Despite these worries, the regional president of the employer’s association of tourist establishments believes that “there will be a good summer” in the Mar Menor and even though the bad publicity surrounding the lagoon is undoubtedly “damaging”, strong tourist numbers over the winter and Easter indicate that this high-season will be a success.
